- The Itinerary of Marrakech Souks and Medina Half-Day Tour
Protected from the sun by slatted awnings, you will find a variety of quarters established by craftsmen according to a structured system. There are souks of basketwork, dried fruit, spices, clothes, wool, skins, Berber carpets, leatherwork, ironwork, jewelry, and more.
Go to souks such as the Rue du Souk Smarine, which leads onto the Place Rahba Kedima, site of the old slave market. Today it’s an important place of commerce, though of a less unsavory nature! See old apothecary shops, and haggle for bargains along the way.
Next, visit Djemaa El Fna, the traditional meeting place for peasants and merchants from the Sous region, High Atlas, and South Morocco. The square fills with fruit and spice sellers in the morning. See the guerrab (water carriers) in their traditional costumes, and vendors plying baskets, ironware, and more.
By the afternoon, at the time of your tour, Gnaoua dancers descended from former Guinean slaves arrive to play music, tell stories, and charm snakes in Djemaa El Fna Square, providing a theater of entertainment to passers-by.
